<image:title>Blog - How to Improve the Safety and Accessibility of Your Bedroom - If you have a mobility limitation, sometimes it can be helpful to have something to hold onto next to or on the bed to help with rolling in bed, sitting up, and standing from the edge of the bed. There are many styles and models of bed rails that can act as a handle to hold onto to help with these tasks. Some people have pre-concieved notions that bed rails are meant to keep someone from rolling out of the bed. While there are some rails that are designed with this intention, bed rails can come in all shapes and sizes. Some are shorter in nature that purely act as a handle and do not block your pathway of getting in and out of bed. If you live in an assisted living environment, there may be restrictions on the use of bed rails. It is always a great idea to consult with an occupational therapist when addressing problems with bed mobility to provide advice on which adaptive equipment will best meet your needs. Also see our blog on “"How to Choose a Bed Rail” (BLOG COMING SOON!) for more information on choosing a bed rail that is compatible with your bed.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - How to Improve the Safety and Accessibility of Your Bathroom - The transition from sitting to standing can be a challenge for seniors. Low toilet seats can be especially difficult for seniors with arthritis or other mobility issues. Installing a raised toilet seat can make this task much easier, decreasing pain and strain on the knee joints, while improving safety. Consider choosing a seat with sturdy handles for additional support. I prefer to use models that bolt to the toilet commode for improved safety and stability. Risers that simply sit on top of the commode with a simple clamp tend to tip and are not as stable. This Carex Toilet Seat Riser (pictured here) is my go-to model for toilet seat risers. Be sure to check if your toilet is round in shape or elongated, before purchasing a riser.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - How to Improve the Safety and Accessibility of Your Bathroom - For seniors with mobility and balance issues, standing for an extended period in the shower can be challenging and risky. A shower chair or bench provides a stable seating option, allowing seniors to shower comfortably and safely. My go-to favorite shower chair is the Carex Shower Chair (pictured here). This chair has a deeper seat for better stability and the plastic legs allow for easy adjustment of height without creating rust over time, as with models with metal legs. If you like your shower chair to have some armrests or handles, I also like the Drive Medical Shower Chair. Most shower chairs are compatible with standard showers and baths, however some older bathtubs are too narrow to fit a shower chair. If you or your loved ones have specific needs for mobility and safety, please consider requesting a referral for an occupational therapy home assessment to help find the shower chair that will best meet your needs.</image:title>

<image:caption>This means no bending at the waist beyond 90*. If you are sitting upright in a chair with your back straight, that is as far as your should lean. This is one of the hardest precautions to abide by, as it means that you will not be permitted to bend and pick something up off the floor, bend over to tie your shoe, or bend to put on your sock.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - What are Spinal Precautions? - 2) No Lifting</image:title>
<image:caption>This means that you should avoid lifting anything that weighs more than a gallon milk (approximately 5 pounds). It is helpful to buy household goods in smaller containers or in smaller quantities, and to unload items in several, short trips. Ask for help with lifting to avoid strain and injury.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - What are Spinal Precautions? - 3) No Twisting</image:title>
<image:caption>Your back and your feet should always be facing the same direction. This means, no turning sideways to reach for something out of the closet or to look behind you. Take several slow, small steps to turn and fully face the direction you need to look or turn.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A dressing stick has multiple purposes ranging from assisting with taking clothes or socks off your body, putting clothes on, and even reaching for clothes within your closet. The dressing stick can be used to hook on a belt loop and to wrap a jacket around your shoulders. The purpose of the dressing stick is to prevent bending and twisting while getting dressed.</image:caption>

<image:caption>There are two types of sock aids, one is made of plastic while the other is flexible. You will place the sock around the end of sock aid while making sure the sock is adjusted appropriately to simulate the positioning on your foot. The long handles are used to place the sock on the foot without having to bend over or lift your legs. Feel free to check out our our YouTube video on “How to use a Sock Aid” for more information on how to use it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - What is a Hip Kit? - Long-Handled Sponge</image:title>
<image:caption>Long handled sponges are most suitable to be used while showering to assist with bathing your lower leges and back. A towel can be wrapped around the end of the sponge to dry your legs and back. It is important to make sure your sponge is left to air dry after each use. The picture shown here is a sponge that is typically given to clients while they are in the hospital or rehab. For home use, I prefer a long-handled loofah like this one, as they last longer and are more sturdy.</image:caption>

The elasticity in the laces allows you to keep your shoes tied while putting on and taking off your shoes while also ensuring a comfortable fit. Elastic shoe laces come in a variety of styles: Standard Laces No-Tie Laces Bungee-Style Laces Just be sure to check the size and length of the shoelaces before purchasing. <image:title>Blog - Features of a Manual Wheelchair, Explained - Cushions</image:title>
<image:caption>If your you or your client’s wheelchair came with a cushion, make sure you use it! This is important for a few reasons: Pressure Relief: The cushion provides additional padding under the client to prevent pressure ulcers. This is especially important if your client is in their wheelchair for much of the day, as the seat of the chair itself is not sufficiently padded. Chair Height: If your client’s wheelchair was purchased through their insurance, the chair was specially measured and designed to fit their body type and size. This measurement includes the seat-to-floor height of the chair. The thickness of the cushion is included in that measurement, so if you remove the cushion, it means that their chair will be 2-4 inches too low, making it difficult for them to stand up or self-propel using their feet.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Features of a Manual Wheelchair, Explained - Arm Rests</image:title>
<image:caption>Some wheelchairs have “swing-away” arm rests, that can either be removed, or swung back to make room for a sliding transfer, using a small lever or push-button at the front base of the arm rest. Other wheelchairs have rigid armrests that do not move at all. If you have a client that needs to scoot or slide laterally for transfers, they will require a wheelchair that has swing away armrests. If their chair does not have this function, please request a therapy evaluation for a wheelchair assessment.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A standard wheelchair has 2 large back wheels and 2 small front caster wheels. The brakes are located on the large wheels at the patient’s side. The weight of a standard wheelchair varies depending on its size, and what it is made from. The average weight for a “standard” manual wheelchair is around 41-43 pounds. Lightweight models weigh a little less, averaging at about 35-38 pounds.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Full Body Sling with Hygiene Cutout This sling has the same design as the full-body sling, but has a circular cutout near the bottom to allow a patient to be positioned onto the toilet. Hygiene slings, like this one are generally made of mesh, for ease of cleaning and washing. Hygiene slings can also be helpful for use while bathing to allow access to the patient’s bottom for thorough hygiene. One thing to consider with this type of sling, is that the patient’s pants will need to be taken off prior to transferring them to the toilet. This typically involves putting the patient in bed, removing their pants, and then transferring them to the toilet, as there will not be a way to take off clothing while in the sling. This process takes some planning ahead, but can be effective.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What is the Difference between a Hoyer Lift and a Sit to Stand Lift?</image:title>
<image:caption>Hoyer Lifts A Hoyer lift is device that holds the patient in a hammock-type sling to lift them completely up and transfer them to a new surface. The sling covers the upper 2/3 of their body and comes in a variety of designs, depending on the function you are looking for. For assistance with choosing a sling, see our article on “How to choose the correct Hoyer lift sling.” A Hoyer lift can be used to transfer a person in and out of bed and can also be used for recliners, wheelchairs, shower chairs and bedside commodes. Because of the hammock-style sling design, patients have greater trunk and postural support while in the device, however functions that can be completed in the lift are slightly more limited.</image:caption>

Equipment may include shower chairs, toilet safety frames, dressing aids, walkers wheelchairs, hospital beds, and bed rails, just to name a few. We know which models work and which don’t, because we’ve tried them all! We will provide a professional assessment to help determine which equipment or mobility device will work best for you, and assist with obtaining your equipment through a local vendor. In some cases, we can utilize your insurance benefits for both the assessment and the equipment. We can assist with basic assembly and installation, as well as training on safe techniques for using your equipment.</image:caption>
